Leeds University Union has been the setting to a number of well renowned live performances.
From ‘The who, live at Leeds (1970) to more recent ‘the IDLES’ (2019).
Friday the 15th of November 2019 was no different.
Jade bird continued to uphold the venues legacy with a charismatic performance full of intensity, souring through a range of diverse emotions and styles.
Her angelic and mature stage persona offers a personal experience, one that may have thought to have been lost in present modern day artists.
With such raw talent and focus you’d expect Jade to be withdrawn from audience participation but she continued to surprise, with childlike sense of humour and immense gratitude towards her fans.
The 21-year-old opened with the unforgettable single ‘Uh Huh’, captivating the whole rooms attention with immense power, 90’s inspired riffs and a catchy call and response chorus.
A personal favourite was ’Love has all been done before’, where she exposes her fragile emotions, those that would make anyone contemplate their own dearest of heartbreaks.
Jade Bird is a young dynamic songwriter, who offers a dynamic role full of musical influences from Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan to more contemporary artists such as Lana del ray or The lemon twigs. In sight to her name, bird had migrated up and down the country before making her mark in London.
“I’ve had some of these songs for over 18 months now, so you can imagine how it feels when people are going, ‘Jade Bird, the country-folk singer’ or ‘Jade Bird, the pop singer’,’ she says. “I’m sat there like, ‘OK, I’ll be what you want for now’, but I can keep throwing out these songs that are completely different. Every time people try and define me, it gets battered around. I like to keep people guessing.”
Although Bird is still freshly seeded within the music industry, I feel that she’s heading down the right path with her live performances. The self-titled debut album ‘Jade Bird’ offers eclectic energies that are utilised in her performance, diversifying and keeping the audience members on their toes. As she concludes the first chapter of her musical career, we all wait in anticipation to see what Jade Bird has in store for us in the early dawns of 2020.
